A new take on our R Spec wheel studs. These are the same specifications as our direct fit Shelby GT350 R wheel studs with an additional 6mm starting bullet on the end.
This stud will allow the ability to run up to a 50mm spacer which is useful for Customers using 12" wide wheels for Autocross who in the past needed to use bolt-on spacers to achieve proper fitment up front. These studs eliminate the additional failure point created by bolt-on spacers and allows the use of a slip on hub and wheel centric spacer simplifying the clamped connection of the wheel to hub. By design it is more reliable, less failure prone and ultimately safer.
If you are looking to adjust track width of your Mustang to aid turn-in without going to the added expense of custom off-set wheels these studs feature 3.175" of useable thread. For comparison, the 14mm ARP 100-7733 (1" Longer than stock) wheel stud offers 2.5" of useable thread. Due to the design of our studs, which do not have thread where the brake rotor hat attaches actually provides a gain of .900" of extended threaded length on only .675" of additional thread. This is what allows us to fit 50mm spacers vs. a max of 25-28mm spacers on the ARP 100-7733.
UHL (Under Head Length) 4.095" R Spec Bullet vs 3.435" ARP 100-7733 essentially allows us to use twice the spacer while only increasing the total under head stud length by .660"
Our Mid Length Stud is 1.200" shorter than our RSPEC Stud. This stud falls between the ARP 100-7733 and the ARP 100-7732. This stud will safely handle a 17MM spacer and possibly up to 20MM spacers. These are ideal length for all four wheels and compliment our RSPEC stud perfectly for the rear application. We have found that the 1/2" longer than stock ARP 100-7732, while much longer than stock, would be too short for certain wheel and spacer combinations.
After supplying thousands of wheel studs and building countless wheel hub assemblies we have seen the advantages and shortcomings of the products in the marketplace. Over the past two years we have studied the needs and challenges our Customers have faced with wheel fitments and especially wheel stud failures.
We have set out to design a wheel stud that fits properly, is easy to install, and build tough enough to withstand the loads placed on them from today's vehicles.
The first issue we desired to solve was an obvious one, no stud was manufactured in the proper length for use with the GT350 R Carbon Fiber wheel. The front wheel contains a thick wheel mounting flange which requires a specific stud length. We designed our stud to be an exact replacement for the lower strength OEM GT350 R Front wheel studs. *6mm Starting Bullet versions have not been verified to work with OEM R Carbon Fiber wheels and Lug Nuts.
The second issue was fitment in the wheel hub. The 14mm race quality wheel studs available use an aggressive knurl diameter which can be challenging to install into the wheel hub. We have found that the knurl removes excessive hub materia during installation and can cause hub flange distortion and create excessive stress in the hub flange. We designed our wheel stud with an OEM style knurl in the standard .625" diameter. We designated the lower section of the stud shank to contain the knurled surface. This allows the stud to self center in the hub and rather than disturbing excessive material from the hub which leads to distortion, the stud is located securely with our larger than stock knurl with no hub flange distortion. Additionally we designed a clipped head that serves two purposes, it clears the radius of the S550/GT350 hub bearing but also allows the studs to be installed into the Front GT350 hubs without any additional grinding or clearancing during installation.
The third challenge was to strengthen the unsupported base of the stud which typically is the failure point of a standard wheel stud. We designed a low stress radius transition from the shank diameter up to the base of the threaded portion of the wheel stud. Applying a radius transition eliminated the typically sharp undercut used on other wheel studs as the stud extends beyond the hub flange.
The final issue we sought to improve upon was in typical end user use and abuse. The finish used by other manufacturers has been claimed to provide lubricating properties. In our experience it is simply a low cost method that makes the stud attractive prior to the first use. We selected a coating that does not introduce changes to the metallurgy but provides a very low friction coating that allows the achievement of proper clamp load at lower torque values. We recommend 100-120 ft/lbs vs. the 150 ft/lbs used on the OEM studs. This is due to the coating used on the studs.
