Callies 180-017 Gen 3-4 LS Hydraulic Roller Camshaft - 5th Place Camshaft Shootout Cam
This Callies Hydraulic Roller Camshaft is the camshaft from The Weingartner LS Camshaft Shootout. Out of 23 Entries this camshaft placed 5th ahead of a Custom Camshaft entered by David Vizard and several other popular shelf and custom ground camshafts.
We sent the original camshaft used in the challenge to Callies so they could perform some post Cam Challenge measurements and quality checks. This is a Brand New Camshaft, never installed, brand new!
Callies fully finished camshafts are machined and heat treated entirely in house. This continuity of manufacturing allows Callies to deliver high quality camshafts on schedule. Our finished cams are ground with the latest Landis CNC technology. They are ADCOLE and Jenoptik inspected for accuracy, making them the most consistent cams on the market today. If required, your cams can be finished with inverted flank lobe profiles and complex VVT oil channels and drillings.
Callies Cam Research Lab – Valvetrain durability is a key ingredient to the success of every engine. The Callies Cam Research Lab has been established to guarantee that our cams are capable of extended life cycles in abusive applications. When combined with our metallurgical capabilities, the Callies Cam Research Lab allows evaluation of lobe profiles, valvetrain systems and processing methods like no other cam company. Spintron testing enables our engineering staff to evaluate valvetrain stability in minute detail up to 11,000 RPM. Programmable test cycles allow complete event simulation. Sixteen channel data acquisition can provide monitoring of temperatures, pressures, flows, loads and strain. Let Callies help you design your next step forward.
This Camshaft Produced the following Results:
655.4 HP @6600 RPM
555.4 lb/ft @5400 RPM
547.5 Average HP from 4000-7000 RPM
521.1 Average lb/ft from 4000-7000 RPM
This camshaft has a 1200 RPM Peak to Peak Power Band making it even more impressive.
This is our Intro into the Cam Challenge on youtube HERE
We entered 2 Camshafts in this Competition and WE DID NOT USE SOFTWARE
We ran all the data for the test and used a calculator and then chose 2 camshafts that anyone could purchase.
This Callies 180-017 Camshaft had the least amount of Overlap from all the entries that finished 1st-17th. This camshaft will idle below 1000RPM, make vacuum for power brakes while still having a healthy chop out the exhaust. This camshaft profile really is a sleeper among the 100's of LS camshafts on the market, and we have the DATA TO PROVE IT.
This camshaft has .626" Lift at the valve with a 1.7 ratio rocker arm meaning that it will work with factory rocker arms and not destroy valvetrain parts!
This camshaft will require a valve spring with the following specs:
150-175 on the seat
417-448 open
409-420 spring rate
The majority of LS valve springs from Melling (466594), BTR Racing, Straub Technologies, PAC, or PSI will work. They are usually rated for .650-.660" Lift and if you shim them properly the entire valvetrain will remain very stable.
