So first thing we noticed when we inspected the Timken Rear Hub for the S550 Mustangs. It is missing the wiper seal found on the OEM hubs. Its odd because it appears to be machined for the seal, just not there. Our assumption is they eliminated it to reduce cost. Visually inspecting the differences you find the wheel mount forging is more crudely produced than the Ford unit with very smooth, flowing surfaces. Timken part is pretty rough.
We have been asked if our extended stud hub kits are available with the "UPGRADED" Timken Bearing. The Short answer is no. We only build our hub kits with Ford OEM Hubs. The Hubs are made in the USA. We have not found a single aftermarket hub made anywhere but China. We are aware that some vendors claim they are 100% US Made, they are not. If we are being transparent Timken claims their bearings are made in Germany, the boxes the hubs we inspected say China. Pressing a stud in and out left deep witness marks on the hub flange indicating a softer material is specified from OEM.
The second difference we noticed is the wheel mounting flanges are different. The Ford Flange measures approx. 0.480" Thick where the wheel studs press in. The Timken hub measures only 0.430". On the plus side it saves 2.7oz per hub. I would have expected less cost reductions for a "Timken" branded part and it is obvious a Brand in Name Only today.
